Bio

L. S. S. Manickam is the Professor of clinical psychology, Department of Psychiatry, JSS Medical College Hospital, J S S University, Mysore. He obtained his Masters in Psychology from University of Kerala, did his clinical psychology training from the NIMHANS Bangalore and Ph.D in 1992. He had taught at the Department of Psychiatry, Christian Medical College Vellore, CSI Medical College Karakkonam and served as the Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Psychology at Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai before moving to Mysore. Also served as a Visiting Fellow at the University of Birmingham, UK and as a Gestalt Trainer in Nigeria. He underwent training in different forms of therapy and psychological approaches held at France, UK, Israel and Singapore apart from the training for teachers of health professionals.

He is the founder and Hon. Director of Centre for Applied Psychological Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, India. He was associated with different governmental and non-governmental organizations and served as resource person in the areas of alcohol and drug management, sexual health counseling training and psychosocial support in different disasters. Also served as a research consultant in UNDP and WHO projects.

The leadership he gave while responding to the needs of the Service Personnel at the time of Tsuanmi at the Air Force Station Chennai was lauded by the IAF. The national initiative taken in Training of Trainers in Disaster Preparedness is an ongoing program and was executed through the National Academy of Psychology and the support of American Psychological Association and various international psychology associations. It is being continued with the support of the Indian Association of Clinical Psychologists.

He had published several research papers in journals and book chapters and written a chapter on "Sahya: The Concept in Indian Philosophical Psychology and its Contemporary Relevance" in Yoga and Indian Approaches to Psychology and on Integrative Change Model in Psychotherapy.

He is a Fellow of different professional associations including Indian Association of Clinical psychologists and Behavioral Medicine Society of India and member of a number of psychology associations including National Academy of Psychology, and Indian Association of Applied Psychology and an associate member of Indian Psychiatric Society. He is also an International Affiliate of the American Psychological Association.
He is in the editorial board of different journals including Indian Journal of Psychiatry. He was the Secretary of the Indian Association of Clinical Psychologists from 2008-2011.
He had presented papers at international conferences held at UK, Singapore, Germany, Thailand, Sweden and Israel. He has conducted workshops on Gestalt Therapy in various Universities in India and abroad.

He is married, and his wife is working as the Principal of the Government College of Teacher Education, Kozhikkodu and has one daughter who is doing her Diploma in Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry, JSS University, Mysore.

He has several articles written on Indian Psychological concepts, two of which are attached.
Another is the editorial- which was written for the special supplement of Indian Journal of Psychiatry-on Indian Mental Concepts. The supplement is available on line and it is open source one.
